“Who are we, if we don’t have a past” (253)?
At this point in the book, Violet’s condition is decaying at a rapid rate and she knows that she needs to tell all of her memories to someone before they are lost. That someone is none other than Titus. She is afraid of losing who she is and becoming an unrecognizable version of herself, so Violet tells the only person she trusts to hold all of that information. This message that the quote is a big indicator that Violet will not be the same person after this.
What makes us who we are? It is our past. There is no substance in life if there is nothing to look back to and see that we as a species have become more intelligent. If the past is forgotten, we are bound to make the same mistakes. An example of this is if an athlete makes a mistake and then forgets about it, he or she will never get better because that error cannot be addressed. This quote also gets the reader to think about their own past and how it has defined them and what their legacy will be. In addition to the connection the mind, it also connects to my senior project.
