Summary
It is a futuristic Earth where the environment has lost the battle to humanity and the world is suffering continued pollution from the United States. Around 70 percent of the American population has implanted inside the brains a device called a feed. It is a supercomputer that is controlled with the mind. The drawback to them is that companies have access to the thoughts of the person, being able to advertised to their personality. The bombardment of the commercials never seems to end for Titus and his core group of friends who are content with buying products whenever they want.
Titus and his team are on the Moon for their Spring Break. While there, they meet Violet, a pretty girl who questions everything. Violet joins them for in going to a club where they are hacked by a man protesting against the feeds. In the hospital they have their feeds temporarily shut down to repair damage. Violet and Titus also develop feelings for each other while there. Eventually, the group is allowed to go back to Earth, even though Violet’s feed is not completely fixed.
A while after coming back from the Moon, Violet brings up resisting the feed by looking at random and numerous different products to confuse the system that determines what she wants to buy. After finding out that her personal information has been looked at by another person, Violet tells Titus that her feed is breaking down to an extent that it could kill her. As a sign of her deterioration, she loses all of her memories of the year the feed device was installed. In addition, Violet falls apart and emotionally explodes on one of Titus’s friends. This causes Titus to lose interest in her.
In an attempt to save her memories before she dies, Violet sends all of them to Titus for safekeeping. Not knowing how to handle the emotional burden of someone’s life, Titus deletes the memories. To fix her feed device, Violet and her father petitioned to FeedTech because they could not afford the repair. Their request is denied based on that she did not have linear shopping patterns and FeedTech determined that she would not be a valuable investment.
Later, Violet shows up at Titus’s house to live her life to the fullest before it ends. They go out for the weekend, but because Titus did not return her affection they start to fight and eventually break up. Soon after, Violet tries to apologize, but Titus ignores her messages.
Months later, Violet’s father informs Titus that it is all over. While Violet is in a coma, her father and Titus have a confrontation since Titus did nothing to help Violet in her final hours. Titus storms out of the house, but then he returns two days later to tell Violet’s almost lifeless body stories of the world and to retell the story of their relationship rebelling against the feed.
