Throughout the course of the story, the reader discovers more about Jay Gatsby such as that he came from humble beginnings and he has been madly in love with Daisy for years. All of the riches and extravagant parties were an attempt to attract Daisy over to his home. Eventually, Daisy does return to Gatsby, but all is lost when he discovers that she no longer loves him and she loves only his possessions. In a drive home, Daisy with Jay Gatsby runs over Tom’s mistress, but Gatsby takes the blame. This leads to the mistress’s husband killing Gatsby and then ending his own life. Gatsby’s dream of love is crushed because Daisy and others took advantage of his hospitality, much like how the American dream is destroyed because of the pursuit of wealth.
