Summary
It is an alternate 1984. Winston Smith, a low ranking Party member, lives in London, in the nation Oceania where no matter where he goes, he is being watched. From the central park, to the work place, to even his own home, Big Brother, the leader of the land, is watching. The Party controls everything from the past to the language. Winston is unlike the others in that he is having rebellious thoughts where he is frustrated with the stiff regulations of the Party. The danger of this is that even bad thoughts are crimes. At his work, he meets the love of his life, Julia who has the same feelings for him. Over the course of the novel, they meet in secret to have sex and talk about the bits pf life that are now illegal. They meet people that they believe to be a part of a secret organization, the brotherhood, that their purpose is meant to overthrow the government. At one point, Winston is given a book, a manifesto of sorts, that proclaim the purpose of the brotherhood. On one of their getaways, both Julia and Winston are caught with the book and arrested by the Thought Police, the right hand of Big Brother. In their captivity, they are tortured endlessly until they are converted to believe in Big Brother. It ends with Winston stating that he loves Big Brother.
